Traditional Micro-Hydropower Stations: Concentrated in the Danube River Basin and Mountainous Regions
According to data from the Bulgarian Energy Regulatory Agency, as of the end of 2020, Bulgaria had approximately 150 small hydropower stations (including micro-hydropower stations). Their geographical distribution is highly concentrated:
Danube River Basin: This is the primary distribution area, accounting for over 60% of the country’s small hydropower stations.
Balkan Mountains and Black Sea Coast: Other stations are mainly located in mountainous rivers and small reservoirs in the Balkan Mountains and along the Black Sea coast.
A World Bank report lists some specific micro-hydropower station planning projects, such as the Ravna power station (2000kW) on the Taja River in the Haskovo region and the Bogaevzti power station (190kW) on the Elechnitza River in the Sofia region.
Innovative Application: Micro-hydropower within Water Supply Pipelines
This is a new trend emerging in Bulgaria in recent years: generating electricity using excess water pressure within water supply networks.
Bansko: The country’s first such project is located here, with an 18-kilowatt micro-turbine installed within the water supply pipeline.
Sofia: The capital plans to install two hydroelectric generators in its main water supply lines, expected to generate 12 gigawatt-hours annually.
Blagoevgrad: The local water company is also generating electricity using micro-hydroelectric turbines within its pipelines.
